Portuguese cuisine

During your visit in Portugal you can try many delicious and not very expensive meals. In every town there are many small restaurants where you can try local cuisine. If you want to feel the real flavor of Portuguese you should avoid restaurants for tourists and try to find small places where natives eat. Of course menu in such places are only in Portuguese, but the staff is always very helpful even if they don’t know English (what is really rare). You should also notice that payment by card is usually not available.

The first meal after wake up is breakfast. I suggest you resign from breakfast in hotel and go out. In central parts of Lisbon and Porto and in residential areas you can find many places where you eat cheap and delicious breakfast. Portuguese eat breakfast in places called confeitaria and pastelaria. Confeteria is a kind of a confectionery while pastalaria you can also eat sandwiches. One meal with coffee costs about 1,5-2Euro, so the prices are very reasonable. Typical Portuguese breakfast is a toast with ham and cheese and coffee or sweet croissaints. Also very popular are croquets, codfish patty (bolinhos de bacalhau) and shrimp patty (rissol camarão).
Croissanints are not only popular sweets in Portugal. On every step you can  find Pastéis de Nata. Originally it was a cookie typical for Belem area (A part of Lisbon).

Portuguese sailors explored the world but it wouldn’t be possible without proper food supplies. Food supplies had to be specially preserved against decay. One of the ways is by preserving in salt. Bacalhau which is actually dried and salted codfish is in every food shop. Obviously salted lobes must be prepared and cooked before consumption.
Other basic meal is sardines. Sardine is so popular, that is a symbol of Lisbon and you can find a lot souvenirs based on sardine shape. Of course you can try sardine in many different forms.
Portugal lies over the ocean, so cuisine is based on products that can be caught in the ocean. So you can try there like octopus, shrimps, clams and other seafood.

Francesinha  is a traditional meal that comes from the Porto area.  It is  made with bread, wet-cured ham,  fresh sausage like chipolata, steak or roast meat and covered with melted cheese  and beer sauce. Francesinha is actually a Sandwich, but it is served with  french fries, so it is very satiating.
We found very good place where francesinha is served, but my friend wasn’t able to eat all meal. I barely ate my portion, so I couldn’t help her. So the staff thought that francesinha does not taste her and the waiter  circle around us and feel guilty for that.  In the end he propose us discount. It was very nice. But of course we couldn’t accept that.
For every meal you will get entrances (bread, butter, marinated olives) and it is not for free. If you touch them it will be added to your bill in the end. Usually each entrance costs from 0,5 to 1 Euro.

Almost in every restaurant you can drink juice from freshly squeezed oranges.
Portuguese don’t drink beer, they prefer vine, so you will not find many types of beer in shops. The most popular brand is “Super Bock” and you can buy bottles from 0,2 l to 1l. Beer costs more less the same in restaurants and in supermarket.

Vine is the most popular drink in Portugal, and you can find even cheaper vines than beer. One bottle of vine costs from 1,4 Euro.  I recommend you original Porto vine like Sandeman. One bottle costs about few Euro, but the taste is delicious. You also should remember that Porto vine contains about 20% of alcohol.

Porto - Portugal

From airport to Porto.

Road from the airport to the city center is very easy, because in front of the arrival terminal is a mtro station. You just need to buy the ticket (with Andante Azul card) in a vending machine and you may jump into the train (violet line E). Metro in Porto is actually an over ground tram, but natives call it metro. The ticket costs about 1,8 Euro, but first you have to get a prepaid card “Andante Azul” which costs 0,5 Euro. It is similar to oyster card in London.  You have to pay some deposit and travel in metro as long as you have some money on the card.  (http://www.metrodoporto.pt/en/).

The most important stops are “Senhora da Hora” (If you want to go to the ocean), and Trindade in the city center. The structure of metro is very simple, and very smart planned so you shouldn’t lost.

During our trip in Porto we were sleeping in Pilot Hostel (LARGO ALBERTO PIMENTEL 11, Porto) and I recommend that place. Very clean place and safe place with amazing atmosphere. One night costs about 10-12 Euro. You can buy a breakfast for next 2 Euro.

The road to ocean is quite easy, you just need to use the blue line of metro and go into Matosinhos. Matosinhos is a fishing districkt, so you may find there many cheap places to eat a fresh fish.
If you want to go to other parts of Portugal you may go by:
-          1. A plane. Especially to Lisbon (Lisboa) you can find plane tickets for  15 Euro, but you have to go to an airport, so it means next few Euro  more.
-          2. A train. The cheapest, but the slowest are Urbino Regionale. Ticket to Lisbon costs about 20 Euro. Train Station Sao Bento is in the city center.
-          3. A bus. One of the cheapest line is Rede Express (www.rede-expressos.pt). Ticket to Lisbon costs about 17 Euro, and you can ask about discount for students under 29.  The bus station is near Sao Bento Train Station.

What about food?
You should avoid places where are a lot of tourists and try to find where Portugese eat. I have few nice places, like Matosinhos where you can eat fresh fish  outdoor on some stands.
Food is really cheap. Coffee costs about 0,5-1 Euro, as much a one glass of beer (0,2l). Full meal you can buy for about 6-10 Euro. I even found some small restaurant, where I paid less than 5 Euro for whole dinner. That place is marked as an orange point on a map as “delicious food”

The most famous local dishes are sardines, fransesinha, and tripa soup.  Portuguese food is not for vegetarians. It is heavy, and based on a meat or fish.

Don’t forget about siesta.

Weather in Portugal is rather hot, so to avoid working in a hottest hours in a day there is a siesta.  Between 1 PM and 4PM  shops and offices are closed.

Sleeping in airports

One of the biggest  problems in travelling is limited budget. The easiest way to safe some amount of money is to resign from a hotel and sleep in an airport. It works after arrival or before departure, because transfer from a city to an airport may cost much more than hostel.

Safety on an airport is the basic problem. I’ve never had any bad experience, but you have to be very careful.  Obviously you don’t have any private space on the terminal. Everyone may sit near you and start snoring, but you shouldn’t avoid other travelers, especially when you are alone. There is much more safe to stay in a group than hide alone. Tickets, documents and money have to be hide somewhere deep in your luggage or in some hiding place under your clothes, that you will always have it with you.

To have a good sleep you have to find some comfortable place. If you arrive on the airport at 1st AM all best places will be occupied. In the other hand arriving at 8 PM is to early, and you will be bored until morning.

Wi-fi is not always for free. In some airports you can use internet only for first 15 minutes for free. But  you can try to clean browser history and cookie files from your mobile or computer.  In the Porto airport it works, so you may surf on the internet as much as you want. But for example in Barcelona El Prat it doesn’t work at all.

Charging battery of your mobile phone may be sometimes a little bit difficult. Usually you may find a power socket in a toilet, but there are some airports, where all sockets are hide. I don’t remember exactly where it was, but once my friend had to make a phone but his battery was discharged, and we had to disconnect a vending machine form a socket.

Prices of food and drinks on airports are not best, but after arrival you may be thirsty. Sometimes you may find some places with food for staff,  where you may find something for low prices. There is such place on Charleroi airport (Brusseles). Just go out from arrival terminal go to the right. In the end there are magic stairs which direct you to the police station. After the corner you will find vending machines where you can buy som food and drinks for ½ of a normal price.

In next posts I will describe some tips about certain airports. If you are interested you can also visit:  http://www.sleepinginairports.net/

At the beginning there is always human

This blog is about my greatest passion - travelling.
Maybe you are wondering about what is so amazing in travelling?
The answer is simple: People!

It is very good when we have a chance to taste foreign cuisine, know the different culture, but the most important are always people. If you don’t met someone during your journey you will lose your best chance.

I’m not going to write about people I’ve met, but I will never forget them. And someday, maybe I will meet you.
