Public transport in Poland

Travelling around Poland.

Karkonosze mountains in Poland

Traveling around Poland is easy, the only problem is that not everyone speak English. Mostly older people don’t know English. It results from that before 1990  Poland was under Soviet autonomy and only a few people had chance to see Western Europe. So no one was learning English. It has changed in the 90’s but older cashers on railway stations don’t speak English at all. So always try to find young cashers.

Around Poland you can travel by plane, railway, bus, blabla car, and you can hitchhike.

1.       Travelling by plane. The cheapest option is to choose Ryanair http://www.ryanair.com/ But this carrier doesn’t fly from all Polish airports. So you can choose Polish Airlines Lot http://www.lot.com/pl/pl/ This carrier sells tickets from 60 PLN (14EUR) so it is also very good option.

2.       Travelling by train

Railway infrastructure is  widespread in Poland, so if you want to go to some small town this is probably the best idea. You may feel confused on railway station but if you try it once you will have no problems next time. In Poland there are many railway companies (PKP Przewozy Regionalne, PKP Intercity, Koleje Dolnośląskie, Koleje Mazowieckie itp.). But you can buy ticket for every train AT the box office. But if you plan your travel in advance the best idea is to buy your ticket in the internet (http://rozklad-pkp.pl/). There are some discounts for those, who buy tickets few weeks before departure.  On the same page you can check train schedule.
The cheapest carrier is PKP Przewozy Regionalne. The trains are sometimes not very confortable, and dirty.

3.       Travelling by bus.

Buses are very popular in Poland, but there are many small carriers and most of them don’t sell tickets online. Tickets for most muses you can buy from the driver except PolskiBus, sindbad and simpleexpress where you have to buy tickets online.

Before you start your travel you  may check schedules on:

http://www.albatrosbus.pl/ - cheap carrier, which I recommend . Tickets from 1 PLN  cheap carrier, which I recommend. Tickets from 1 PLN in South-East Poland.

http://www.e-podroznik.pl/ - time schedule for most carriers in Poland, and tickets online. But not all carriers sell tickets in the internet. If there is no possibility to buy tickets in yhe internet you can buy ticket from driver.

4.       Blablacar and hitchhike

Hitchhiking is not very popular in Poland, but you shouldn’t have any problems to catch a car.

Blablacar is very popular way of travelling if you want to find transport use this website http://www.blablacar.pl/,

  1. I don't know if I would like to travel with strangers. Blablacar is very good on paper, but I would not catch a ride nor would I take someone with me. Seems like asking for trouble ;)
